COLOURS & PAIRINGS

Everyone will be ranked based on their current UCU rating as at 15 March 2016. For Round 1, the top half will play the bottom half. From Round 2 onwards, players will be paired with other competitors on similar points.

Where possible, a player's colour will be alternated each week to ensure an equal number of games with White and Black. However, with the open nature of this tournament where it is not compulsory to play every round, some competitors will not play every week and therefore alternating the colours for each round can not always be guaranteed.

Please also note that, while each round will ideally see the player face a new opponent, because there are 8 rounds, in some cases a competitor may be paired with a player they have already played in an earlier round, however, in such cases, the colours will be reversed.

ARBITER

Brendan Jamison. At the start of each round, if there are an odd number of players, the arbiter will play to balance the numbers so that no-one misses the opportunity to play a game.

MANUAL DRAW

The Arbiter will make the draw 48 hours before each round. Competitors MUST NOTIFY THE ARBITER in advance if they are not playing in a round. To email the artbiter, click here

The draw will be published on this web page every Sunday at 8pm.

PLAYERS' COMMITTEE

If a player wishes to appeal the decision of the Arbiter, the competitor must finish their game and then submit the appeal in writing within 30 minutes of the round ending. A three member players' panel will discuss the validity of the appeal and they have the power to overturn the Arbiter's decision. For this tournament, the committee will be drawn from those who undertook the National Arbiter's Course in August 2015:

Damien Cunningham

(UCU President)

Ross Harris

(UCU Tournament Director)

Robert Lavery

(UCU Ratings Officer)

RULES

As per the league, FIDE rules will apply.

Ulster Chess Union History

The first chess tournament was held in Belfast in 1886 under the Irish Chess Association which was founded in 1885. It was replaced by the Hibernian Chess Association [HCA], established in 1891. The 1892 North of Ireland Congress included the first Ulster Championship and a group of club secretaries remained in existence to organise the annual Ulster Championship and Silver King league (which started in the 1893-4 season).

The HCA subsequently evolved into the Irish Chess Union [ICU], which was established in 1912. The ICU has operated continuously for the past 103 years and has been a member of FIDE since 1933 (World Chess Federation). The role of the ICU was to govern chess throughout the entire island of Ireland and act as the parent body for the 4 regional chess bodies in the provinces of Munster, Connacht, Leinster and Ulster.

The Ulster Chess Union [UCU] was established on 1st February 1932. It was born out of a desire to revive the Ulster Championship, not held since 1902, and the revived championship began the following year in 1933.

Key Roles of the UCU

(1) The Ulster Chess Union organises the annual Belfast & District Chess League which runs from October to April every season, attracting 18 teams and over 150 competition class players.

(2) The UCU organises monthly chess tournaments throughout Belfast and further afield in Bangor, Omagh and Derry/Londonderry.

(3) The UCU operates a proactive education programme of free coaching in schools and a monthly tournament for children’s chess.

(4) The UCU holds an annual Grandmaster Simultaneous event in Belfast.

(5) The UCU holds an annual outdoor chess event every September in the Cathedral Quarter as a highlight of Belfast Culture Night.

(6) The UCU operates a rating system for all tournaments and league divisions.

Round 7 welcomed 9 year old Birney Wang (===) from our Children's Chess Club and he defeated Paul Charles (563) with great ease and speed. This now brings a total of 5 children into the tournament, spread across the Intermediate, Junior and Newcomer bands. It bodes well for the future of Ballynafeigh to have so many progress through our Children's coaching sessions into the adult competitions. Club founder Damien Cunningham (1775) should be saluted for sacrificing the opportunity to play in the Spring Tournament to instead devote each week to the development of our youth wing on the ground floor.

The Board 1 clash saw tournament leaders Calum Leitch (1843) as White against Mikhail Pavlov (1631). Despite over 200 rating points difference, Black deployed his trademark Dutch and developed sustained pressure on White's Kingside, enthralling spectators as the battle became a rollercoaster of a ride, swinging back and forth between White and Black. In the endgame, after Leitch secured a 3 v 1 pawn majority on the Queenside, he allowed his last piece to be captured to allow a pawn promotion. It was now the White Queen v the Black Rook, Bishop and pawn. With both players in time trouble, Black missed a Queen checking fork on the Bishop and then the same on the the Rook. Leitch now remains unbeaten on 100% with Pavlov nudged down to third place but still in strong contention for the Silver shield.

Board 2 saw Robert Lavery (1594) as White against Sergio Esteve Sanchez (1858). After Black had castled short and White castled long, Lavery launched his h-pawn for a Kingside attack, opening into an impressive piece deployment to harass Sergio's King, ending with Black having to give up his Queen for a Rook. Soon afterwards, White had won. Lavery now sits in second place in the tournament and will face the powerhouse of Calum Leitch on Board 1 next week.

In the Intermediate Band, Martin Kelly (1360) extended his lead at the top with a win over his nearest rival Barney McGahan (1005) who accidently blundered a piece in the ending after successfully holding a drawn position throughout the game. McGahan remains a strong contender for a prize in the Intermediate Band as his solid style of play can prove very hard to break down.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Band, Rian Mellotte (734) secured a full point lead at the top of his section with an impressive win over fellow QUB player PJ Mallon (975). Mellote broke through on Mallon's Kingside with a menacing Knight to f2, followed by a Queen penetration which drove White's King all the way over to the middle of the a-file before checkmate was delivered.

On board 17, Bobby Campbell (606) was White against Mary McCabe (===) and was subject to a methodical dismantling. The club's newest female member demonstrated a confidence with the Black pieces as she launched one attack after the other. In the end, her passed pawn supported by a Rook proved unstoppable. Now McCabe leads the Newcomer Band, with Avrora Zelenchuk (===) in second place and Amit Pawar (===) in third.

The Tactical Wizardry puzzle was an extremely challenging test this week, with only Paul Anderson (818) able to solve it. Nevertheless Avrora and Daniil Zelenchuk (1003) both came extremely close to cracking it and they remain in 2nd and 3rd place in the puzzle competition.

Round 6 welcomed 2 new players into the tournament, Norman Rainey (681) and Jim Doak (===), raising the total number of entrants to 55.

Board 1 saw a dramatic clash between Mikhail Pavlov (1631) as White against Robert Lavery (1594). The Russian opera superstar deployed the Smith-Morra Gambit against the Sicilian Defence, and while Lavery declined the second pawn offer on c3, the ferocious storm unleashed by White against Black’s uncastled King proved impossible to weather by the lower rated opponent. Pavlov now leads the tournament with 4.5/5, attracting Calum Leitch (1843) for the next Round, after he enjoyed a comfortable win over John O’Doherty (1610), taking Leitch to an impressive 4/4 and retaining his 100% record.

Meanwhile, Martin Kelly (1360) remains joint top of the Intermediate Band with Barney McGahan (1005), and now both players will meet in Round 7. Despite losing his Round 6 game, QUB star Rain Mellotte (734) still remains in first place in the Junior Band with 3/5.

To encourage more new players, the Arbiter has introduced a forth category into the tournament for the 7 unrated players. The Newcomer Band will see certificates awarded for the highest and second highest score of an unrated player who has played in 4 or more rounds. At present, Avrora Zelenchuk (===) is leading the Newcomer Band, closely followed by Mary McCabe (===) in second place.

Round 6 saw a series of comfortable wins for the higher rated opponents as Mark Hewitt (1214) defeated PJ Mallon (975), Edward Doak (1358) won a Rook through a strong attack against Alan York (1149), Ben Campbell (949) annihilated Billy Jackson (881) with an overwhelming opening attack and Liam Ferris (1164) destroyed Derek Truesdale (1019).

12 year old Daniil Zelenchuk (1003) demonstrated an impressive win as Black against Pawel Otocki (1105), hinting at his potential rise in the table during the forthcoming rounds.

On Board 13, Amit Pawar (===) used his momentum as White to unleash powerful kingside threats against Peter Ratcliffe (1025), but Black was able to hold the fort with two well positioned Knights. Ratcliffe developed his own counter-attacks and the position became extremely complex as both players juggled their pieces on both sides of the board. In the end, after an enduringly intense battle, Black penetrated with both Rooks on the first rank, leading to a snappy checkmate and a spectacular end to the game.

Congratulations to the 6 players who all solved this week’s tactical wizardry puzzle - Paul Anderson, Avrora Zelenchuk, Daniil Zelenchuk, Edward Doak, Amit Pawar and Stephen Rush.

Round 5 welcomed three new players into the tournament, Paul Devlin (843), Mary McCabe (===) and Robert Brown (===). Devlin fought hard as Black against Jasper Ramsey (662) but White shrewdly secured a passed pawn that was unstoppable. Meanwhile McCabe dismantled Paul Charles (563) with an elegant flair. The final newcomer, Brown, was overcome as Black against Tyrone Winter (1016) who demonstrated his superiority with the White pieces.

Board 1 saw a quick victory for tournament leader Robert Lavery (1594) who sacrificed his Knight on move 4 in the Cochrane Gambit after John O’Doherty (1610) deployed his trademark Petroff Defence. The spectacular game is displayed below and Lavery now sits on an impressive 4.5/5, looking hard to budge from his Board 1 position.

Round 5 had three other dramatic swashbuckling games. Firstly, Calum Leitch (1843) threw his White pieces and pawns at John Bradley’s (1718) undeveloped position and had the game wrapped up by move 25. Meanwhile, the other jaw-dropping clash was between Richard Gould (1530) as White against Mikhail Pavlov (1631). Black launched an early counter attack with a Bishop sacrifice which created a powerful Black Queen that was mopping up pawns and a Rook through repeated checks to an exposed White King. By the middle game, Black was comfortably sitting with the exchange up and constant pressure on White. On Board 7, Martin Kelly (1360) launched his favourite Bd3 gambit line against Chris Roe’s (1104) French Defence. Throwing two pawns and then two pieces at Roe, Kelly secured the win with a furious attack on the un-castled Black King. All four of these games prove the importance of sacrifice in chess, with Lavery leading the tournament, Leitch remaining on 100% with 3.0/3, Kelly leading the intermediate band with 3.5/5 and Pavlov is on 3.5/4, catapulted to Board 1 for next week as he duels with Lavery in a highly anticipated match up!

Other highlights of the night included an impressive win by Rian Mellotte (734) against Dmitry Zelenchuk (1128), with the latter blundering a Rook in the endgame after a very close 2 hour battle, leaving Mellotte leading the Junior band with 3.0/4. On Board 8, Barney McGahan (1005) delivered a striking performance against Pat McKillen (1369), defeating his higher rated opponent in a convincingly solid style of play.

Congratulations to the 10 players who all solved this week’s puzzle, Robert Lavery, Sergio Esteve Sanchez, Damien Cunningham, Paul Anderson, Pawel Otocki, Edward Doak, Ben Campbell and our favourite Russian chess family of Dmitry, Daniil and Avrora Zelenchuk.

Round 4 welcomed two new female players into the tournament, Iza Bujak (1245) from CS Lewis and Avrora Zelenchuk (===) from Ballynafeigh. John Price (1116) delivered his trademark Stonewall Attack against Bujak and entered the endgame with an exchange up but his King was too vulnerable on h1, cornered behind pawns on g2 and h2 and White skilfully manoeuvred her Queen to deliver the mate. Meanwhile on Board 20, Paul Charles (563) was Black against 7 year old Avrora Zelenchuk who played with superior development and unleashed an overwhelming attack with her Queen and Rook, chasing Black’s King into the centre of the board and forcing Charles to resign before the impending mate. The youngest Zelenchuk is definitely a rising star of the future and we look forward to her continued success in the chess world.

Due to a medical emergency, the much anticipated Board 1 clash between tournament leaders Ross Harris (1719) and Robert Lavery (1594) had to be postponed. It was played on the free week of Tuesday 19 April and ended in a draw. Harris and Lavery both remain top of the leader board with 3.5/4 after their nearest rivals, John O’Doherty (1610) and John Bradley (1718), also both agreed a draw to take them to 3/4.

The titanic battle occurred on Board 3 where Mikhail Pavlov (1631) unleashed a strong opening attack as White against Sergio Esteve Sanchez (1858). In one of the most intense games of the round, White fought hard to win the exchange against his higher rated opponent and projected constant pressure throughout the entire game. However, Black successfully simplified the position and in the end it was Pavlov’s King and two Rooks against Sergio’s King, Rook and Knight. A draw was agreed.

There were a series of comfortable wins at the top half of the leader board with Stephen Rush (1728) defeating Mark Hewitt (1214), Richard Gould (1530) had an extra piece to get the victory over Liam Ferris (1164) and Eoin Carey (1536) beat Ram Rajan (1289) to rise to joint 3rd in the table.

Giving up almost 300 rating points, Board 5 saw Edward Doak (1358) play White against the rock solid QUB Professor Ian Woodfield (1650). The teenager was able to hold equal material against his higher rated opponent, however, the pressure was mounting and by the endgame Woodfield had won a pawn. It became a battle of Black’s King, Bishop and 3 pawns against White’s Knight and 2 pawns. Doak played the ending without fault, with every move executed to Grandmaster accuracy and he successfully held the draw, winning the admiration of the spectators. Even his opponent was extremely impressed with the strength of Doak’s ability, neutralising the endgame with such flair. And given Woodfield can beat players rated over 2000, that is a great compliment indeed!

Another highlight was the spectacular win by Dmitry Zelenchuk (1128) as Black against Pat McKillen (1369). Father to Daniil and Avrora Zelenchuk, Dmitry is no doubt providing much inspiration to his children as he now sits in joint 3rd place on the leader board with an impressive 3/4 points in an extremely challenging field of 52 competitors. He grows from strength to strength each week as his style becomes more solid. His Round 5 opponent will definitely need to exercise considerable caution to avoid losing!

On Board 10, Chris Roe (1104) continued his outstanding tournament performance with an impressive deployment of the London System to seal the victory over Michael Sheerin (1330). And his fellow QUB member, Rian Mellotte (734) delivered another exceptional win with White over Peter Ratcliffe (1025). Meanwhile, PJ Mallon (975) scored an impressive win over veteran David Seaby (1111), proving the university students are all on the rise as they scoop up plenty of rating points each round! And it should be noted, irrespective of the results, all 11 QUB players are contributing a wonderful energy to the tournament, like a breath of fresh air filling the room each week.

On Board 15, Aaron Rush (922) was White against James Shaw (820). By move 13 of the opening, Black failed to continue recording his game. After a couple of moves, Rush offered Shaw a spare pen but recording did not continue. On several further occasions, White requested Black to keep recording the game as per the tournament rules, however, Shaw had abandoned his script. When the Arbiter was made aware of the situation after the game had ended, he ruled the game would be replayed from scratch. The rematch saw Shaw lose on time, catapulting Rush to joint second in the Junior section.

One of the last games to finish was a time scramble for Martin Kelly (1360) as Black against the heavily under-rated Alan York (1149). White played with exceptional strength and by the endgame he was clearly in a winning position. However, as Kelly had to play with lightning fast accuracy, York too speeded up his play and blundered his Rook, leaving Kelly with a Rook and King to White’s King. But with only 30 seconds remaining on Black’s clock, he was unable to nudge the White King to the edge of the board before his flag fell. Even though York won on time, because he had no mating material, the game was automatically declared a draw. And he no doubt took a sigh of relief that Kelly didn’t have 10 more seconds on his clock!

The Round 4 tactical puzzle was successfully solved by 5 competitors. Congratulations to Paul Anderson, Sergio Esteve Sanchez, Yuntian Qiu, Avrora Zelenchuk and Daniil Zelenchuk. Round 5 commences on Tuesday 26 April. The tournament is now getting very exciting, lots of fun games ahead…

Due to a restriction on the number of boards we can fit into the club room, it was necessary for the following Round 3 games to be played in advance. For future rounds, the Lagan Room on the ground floor will operate as the overspill room.

Round 3 welcomed four new players into the tournament, QUB's Stephen Rush (1729) defeated Pawel Otocki (1105) and Charlie Logan (657) triumphed over Yuntian Qiu (===), otherwise known as Acorn, an upcoming star from our Children's Chess Club.

The Board 1 clash was between the rapidly improving Ballynafeigh teenager Edward Doak (1358) and the mighty CS Lewis powerhouse of Ross Harris (1719). The higher rated player had to work very hard to break down his younger opponent who remains a tough adversary in the competition, punching far beyond his weight. In the end, Harris was able to win a piece, with the victory keeping him top of the table on 3/3.

The Board 2 pairing saw an apprehensive John Bradley (1718) battle number 1 seed Sergio Esteve-Sanchez (1858). However, his fears for duelling with the Spanish supremo were obviously enough to keep him sharp and focused, as Bradley was able to hold a draw, keeping him 3rd in the table with 2.5/3. And the only other player on the same number of points is the rock solid John O'Doherty (1610) who secured a draw against Richard Gould (1530) in an enduringly intense battle of wits.

Meanwhile on Board 3, there was plenty of entertaining chess from Calum Leitch (1843) as he gobbled up pawns on Ian Woodfield's (1650) Queenside during the opening. However, with a lack of development for Black, the QUB Professor responded with considerable Queenside pressure from his active Rooks and Queen. However, Leitch knew he could weather the storm and held a pawn advantage throughout the game. As Woodfield poured all his efforts into thwarting the advance of Black's extra pawns, Leitch unleashed a beautiful tactical combination on White's Kingside, winning Woodfield's Rook after a menacing pin to the King. This secured the win for Leitch and his 100% record of 2/2 keeps him a keen favourite to win the tournament.

Board 5 saw an epic battle between Bangor's most promising teenager Michael Sheerin (1330) [Black] against Ballynafeigh's dynamic wizard Robert Lavery (1594). After White deployed his trademark Winawer variation against the French Defence, Black fought hard and seemed to be equalising with enough counter-play. However, after Lavery forced the Queens off, his tactical brilliance saw him place his pieces on squares which slowly smothered Black's position, leading to Sheerin dropping a pawn and soon afterwards his position collapsed. Nevertheless, the Bangor star remains a deadly adversary in the tournament, and without doubt a player to watch like a hawk as he continues to rise in the ranks of top players in Northern Ireland.

Round 3 also saw convincing wins for Rian Mellotte (734) over Billy Jackson (881) through superior piece development and fluid play, Dmitry Zelenchuk (1128) dismantled Liam Ferris (1164) with positional elegance, PJ Mallon (975) weathered the Stonewall attack to score an impressive win over John Price (1116) and Peter Ratcliffe (1025) completely demolished Bobby Campbell (606). A piece down in the middle-game, Paul Anderson (818) proved his strength of character by fighting on against Ballynafeigh newcomer Nick Todd (===). White ended up creating so much pressure in the endgame, Todd became overwhelmed as Anderson pulled off a spectacular turnaround, sealing the victory in a convincing and inspirational style of play!

Another highlight of Round 3 was delivered by Chris Roe (1104) who continued his exceptional form, this time as Black against Damien Cunningham (1775). Despite a rating difference of 671 points, by the middle-game Roe was holding the centre with a powerful Bishop against Cunningham's Knight, meanwhile doubling his Rooks on the h-file to bear pressure down on White's Kingside. Spotting an impressive tactic of a Rook sacrifice on g3, he was able to force the Rook's capture by the h2 pawn, allowing Black's other Rook to dive to h1 with a blissful check, supported by the Bishop on e4 and a menacing advancing Black pawn on f4. Roe secured the perpetual check and most likely scooped about 20 rating points! His performance was much admired by all the spectators who found the game so mesmerising. Roll on Round 4 next week!

Round 2 saw the introduction of 3 new players into the tournament, a warm welcome to Michael Sheerin from Bangor, Garhy Aboelsoud from CS Lewis and Rian Mellote from QUB. On Board 1, Ross Harris (1719) topped the leader board with a convincing win over Pat McKillen (1369). He is joined by 6 other players who have also won both of their first two rounds, John Bradley (1718), Ian Woodfield (1650), Mikhail Pavlov (1631), John O'Doherty (1610), Robert Lavery (1594) and Edward Doak (1358).

A special merit is bestowed upon schoolboy Edward Doak (1358) from Kazakhstan who secured an impressive win over Eoin Carey (1536). Meanwhile on Board 2, Martin Kelly (1360) was Black against John Bradley (1718) and he created very strong counter-play in the centre of the board during the middle-game, even winning a pawn against his higher rated opponent. However, by the endgame John had not only equalised through material but also generated a passed a-pawn. Even if the position could have been held, Martin's flag fell, but he can hold his head up high for delivering an outstanding performance against such a seasoned veteran.

On the lower boards, Peter Ratcliffe (1025) played to a strength far beyond his rating as he duelled with Black against Dennis Wilkinson (1222). Peter managed to double his Rooks on an open a-file which looked menacing on White's castled Queenside but with so many pieces still on the board, Dennis was able to defend and subsequently co-ordinate his pieces to work in better unison, grounding out a win in the end. Afterwards he commended Peter for making him work so hard to find the win.

The final game of the night was a time scramble between Chris Roe (1104) and Robert Lavery (1594), with Chris having a Rook and pawn against Robert's Rook. After Chris declined a draw, play continued for a few more moves and then Robert stopped the clock with 12 seconds remaining on his time and 57 seconds on his opponent's! He claimed it was a drawn position but because Chris was advancing up the board with his King and pawn, the Arbiter declared the game should continue to determine if progress was continuing to be made. Within a couple of moves progress had indeed been made, Robert managed to lure the advancing White King into a h-file trap which led to a snappy Rook checkmate! A very hard outcome for Chris who played an exceptional game and definitely did not deserve to lose, but alas the time scramble proved the killer in the end! And thankfully for Robert, Chris did not accept the offer of a draw!

Out in the hallway, the large magetic demo board offered a tactical wizardry puzzle for all the players rated under 1200. The checkmate in 4 proved an exciting challenge, a fun way of expanding a player's visualisation skills which is key to chess development, enabling a player to become stronger. The first 10 correct answers won an Easter egg and a huge congratulations to all the winners. The crowned 'Tactical Wizards' were Paul Anderson, Edward Doak, Liam Ferris, Ben Campbell, Rian Mellotte, Peter Ratcliffe, Aaron Rush, Amit Pawar, Dmitry Zelenchuk and Alan York.

Round 1 was a fun and challenging night for the bottom half of the seeds who fought hard against the top half. The higher rated opponents won on 17 of the 19 boards, with only two exceptions. On board 1, the heavily under-rated QUB member Liam Ferris (1164) was White against new club addition Sergio Esteve Sanchez (1858). It was like a titanic Grandmaster battle of wits, with spectators enjoying the high level of play from both sides as they tried to nudge a victory, but alas in the end, after much simplification, a draw was agreed. The other game of the night was on board 14 where 12 year-old Daniil Zelenchuk (1003) from Russia took on the Belfast chess legend of Dennis Wilkinson (1222). In a positional game which tantalised onlookers, the strength of Daniil's passed c pawn proved impossible to stop without the loss of a piece and soon afterwards Dennis conceded his defeat. Two competitors were unavailable to play in Round 1, Garhy Aboelsoud (1178) and Rian Mellotte (734), both of whom will join the tournament in Round 2.

PUZZLE 1

Black to checkmate in 4

Round 2 saw the introduction of the first 'Tactical Wizardry' competition. This is a fun challenge which helps improve the key skill of visualisation in chess. The puzzle was displayed on a large magnetic demo board and it caused quite a few head scratches and funny looks of bewilderment! The first 10 correct solutions by entrants rated under 1200 were awarded a chocolate egg. Congratulations to all the winners:

Tactical Wizard Winners - Puzzle 1

1. Paul Anderson

2. Edward Doak

3. Liam Ferris

4. Ben Campbell

5. Rian Mellotte

6. Peter Ratcliffe

7. Aaron Rush

8. Amit Pawar

9. Dmitry Zelenchuk

10. Alan York

Solution: Qxh2+, Kxh2 Ng4+, Kg1 Nh3+, Kf1 Nxh2#

PUZZLE 2

White to checkmate in 3

Open to all players in the competition, Puzzle 2 proved quite the brain-teaser, even for the super strong!

Solution: Bb2  Ke4, Bc1  Kf4, Kd3#

PUZZLE 3

White to checkmate in 3

Puzzle 3 was much easier than last week's head scratcher! However, so many players were engrossed in their games, only a few took part in the challenge.

Solution: Rxe6+  Nxe6, Nd5 and then White mates on next move. The Black King has no sqaure and if Black moves his Knight on d7 then White plays Nf6#. Alternatively, if Black moves his other Knight which sits on e6, then White mates with Nc7#.

PUZZLE 4

White to checkmate in 3

Puzzle 4 was a fun Queen sacrafice which 10 players successfully spotted.

Solution: Qxg6+  Nxg6, Rg8+ Kh7, hxg6#

PUZZLE 5

White to checkmate in 3

Puzzle 5 had a similar idea to puzzle 2 and proved a fun problem to solve, generating much debate around the demonstration board. 6 players successfully found the mate in 3.

Solution: Bf2  Kd5, Kf4  Kc5, e4#

PUZZLE 6

White to checkmate in 3

Puzzle 6 was very confusing for many of the players, most forgetting the direction of the central White pawns, In the end, only one player solved this week's puzzle.

Solution:  Ne1  Ke5, Bc6 and then there are 3 options for the Black King:

If Black plays Kxd6, White mates with Nf7#

If Black plays Kd4, White mates with Nf3#

If Black plays Kf4, White mates with Nd3#

PRIZES

To be eligible to win the champion's cup, shield or medal, competitors must play in at least 6 rounds, including the last 2 rounds. Percentage scores will determine the winners in each band. If two players are on the same percentage, the player who has played the most number of rounds will be declared the winner. If two players are on the same percentage and have played an equal number of rounds, then a 5 minute blitz game will decide the winner/runner-up. A coin will be tossed to determine colours.

To encourage new players to compete in chess tournaments, two additional prizes will be awarded for the highest and second highest score of an unrated player who has played in 4 or more rounds.

ABOUT THE CHESS CLUB

Known as 'the club of champions', Ballynafeigh Chess Club was established in 2010 by Damien Cunningham. It has grown rapidly throughout the first 6 years of its existence and is now the largest chess club in Northern Ireland.

In March 2015, Ballynafeigh's 1st Team won Division 1 of the Belfast and District Chess League, scooping the biggest prize in Northern Ireland, the prestigious Silver King. The following year in March 2016, the 2nd Team won Division 2 of the league, securing the John Strawbridge Cup.

The club is located at the Ballynafeigh Community Development Association, 283 Ormeau Road, Belfast. The club meets every Tuesday throughout the year, open from 7:45pm to 11pm. The chess standard varies from players rated over 2000 to complete newcomers. The club also operates a children's chess club from 6:30pm to 7:45pm every Tuesday before the adult members arrive.

We welcome everyone at the chess club, irrespective of age, gender, sexuality, religion, race or cultural background.

CHILDREN'S CHESS

The UCU Tournament Director Ross Harris has launched a dedicated website for Children's Chess in Northern Ireland. Please visit the site for details of the monthly chess tournaments for primary and secondary school pupils. These are organised every month by Mark Newman and are held at Methodist College in South Belfast, with the finals held at Stormont.

The site also details the Strandtown Chess Academy which was established by Ross Harris in September 2015 and features 6 modules for school children to advance their skills in chess.

Mission Statement:

"To promote, develop and coach children's chess throughout Northern Ireland so that every child has the opportunity to learn, play and enjoy this great game in a fun and safe environment. We teach our children through a structured curriculum that enables them to not only improve as a player but also to develop important life skills such as long term planning, decision making, problem solving and focus."
