To win a trophy, players will need to compete in a minimum of 6 games, including one session in weeks 5 or 6. Players will be ranked based on their highest percentage score. In the event of a tie, direct encounter will apply. If this is also a tie, a 15+0 rapid game will be played to break the tie. Players will be allocated opposite colours to those of the tournament pairing.

To secure a place in the competition, entrants need to pay their fee in advance to arbiter B. Jamison by bank transfer, Revolut or PayPal. This fee covers the entire competition (i.e. players do not pay per round).

Where possible, players will be paired against opponents within 200-300 rating points.

All rounds will begin at 9:30am. Future dates will be emailed in advance of each round (weather conditions need to be checked before announcing the specific day).

Please note we are playing on picnic tables and have extremely limited capacity. You must book in advance to check there is space available.

Flexible tournament format. You do not need to play each week but you must book a spot before each round. The aim is to have all players get the opportunity to play at least 6 rounds during September and October. We will be playing multiple rounds back-to-back each day.

Please wrap up warm. At least 3 to 4 layers of clothing is recommended. You may also wish to bring along a flask of coffee or tea to sip during the game.

TOURNAMENT RULES:

FIDE rules will apply. Mobile phones must be switched off. Phones making any type of noise will result in the player automatically losing their game.

If your opponent makes an illegal move, pause the clock, call the arbiter over. You will be awarded 2 extra minutes if the Arbiter agrees an illegal move was made. You will win the game if your opponent makes a second illegal move in the same game, provided you still have mating material left on the board, otherwise the game is declared drawn.

SAFETY RULES

By entering the tournament, you agree to adhere to the following safety measures:

1. Double-vaccinated players do not need to wear a face covering at the chess tables. You can bring your vaccine card or email a photo in advance. Non-vaccinated players need to wear a face covering at the chess tables.

2. Players will need to wear gloves or apply hand sanitiser before the start of each game. Bottles will be purchased for each table.

3. Chess equipment will be disinfected before the start of each round.

4. For social distancing, we will only have one board per picnic table.

5. When watching games, please keep a 2 metre distance from the players and avoid standing too close to other spectators.

6. No cash will be handled at the event. Entry fees to be paid in advance and fees will be used to purchase the engraved trophies, Dettol wipes and hand sanitisers. Entry fees are non-refundable as they are used to cover the running costs of the event.

7. Prior to the chess tournament, if you or someone you live with has developed a cough, fever or a loss of taste or smell, please stay at home and do not come to the event. Please notify the organiser immediately.

SUMMARY OF ENTRY PROCESS.

1. Email to check space is available

2. Pay entry fee online

3. Players should then email their vaccine status, attaching a photo of their vaccine card or Covid Certificate NI or confirm to bring it along on the day. Any non-vaccinated entrants should declare they promise to wear a face covering at all times while seated at the chess board.
