Tournament Report

by Chief Arbiter B. Jamison

On Saturday 26 June, 20 chess players gathered at Hazelbank Park for a summer blitz. We were delighted to welcome several new players to our chess community, with the super talented 13 year old Robert Napier from Downpatrick winning 2nd place in the 'Lough View Blitz Championship'. Meanwhile, 8 year old Lorcan Rippon won the trophy for 'Best Newcomer' and we hope to see him at many more events in the future as his enthusiasm for chess creates a wonderful buzz for all the players. The section was won by 13 year old Reuben Magill, delivering an impressive 7/8 to be crowned champion. His chess has improved so much over the past year and it is a joy to watch this young star rise up! Adrian Dornford-Smith also perfomed very well with an amazing run of 6 consecutive wins to seal 3rd place.

The top section (for over 1400 rated players), the 'Hazelbank Park Blitz', was a very close race to the finish. Danny Roberts and Des Moreland both enjoyed many impressive wins to finish on 4.5 each, with Danny winning the championship on 'Direct Encounter'. Meanwhile 3 players also tied on 4 points, but all 3 had beaten one of the others, rendering 'Direct Encounter' a non-decider. After review, Matthew Dougherty and Conor Spackman were awarded joint 3rd and 16 year old Calum Glendinning won the Under 1500 Rating Award.

In total, 54 players have competed in the outdoor chess events over the past 6 weeks, all of which contribute to the Open Air Blitz Grand Prix. You can view the current standings here.

Hazelbank Outdoor Blitz Chess Championships 2021

Saturday 22 June 2021

Masks not needed at this event

Check-in at 9:30 am

Games will run until 12:250pm

Prize-giving: 12:25pm to 12:30pm

Rounds:

7 rounds of 5+5
(this means a 60 move game will run for 20 minutes)

Tiebreaks:

At end of tournament, tie-breaks will be determined by Direct Encounter. If tied players drew when facing each other in the tournament, then an unrated blitz-off will be played at 3+2 with opposite colours to those of the tournament. In the event of a 3-way tie where all three players have beaten one of the other two and thus can not be separated by 'Direct Encounter', then the award will be shared.

Rules:

FIDE rules will apply. Mobile phones must be switched off. Phones making any type of noise will result in the player automatically losing their game.

If your opponent makes an illegal move, pause the clock, call the arbiter over. You will be awarded 1 extra minute if the Arbiter agrees an illegal move was made. You will win the game if your opponent makes a second illegal move in the same game, provided you still have mating material left on the board, otherwise the game is declared drawn.

Entry fees

To be paid in advance to avoid handling lots of loose change and needing to disinfect cash. Bear in mind it takes a long while to disinfect all the chess equipment before each tournament so please make life easier for the organiser by paying your fee online in advance.

Remember gloves or hand sanitiser
