Millisle hosts first ever chess event
Saturday June 5, 2021
Millisle Community Garden played host to the town's first ever chess tournament. The morning began with a little drizzle but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the players! Local residents Evan Elwood and Mike McKimm were within walking distance while others travelled from Ards and Bangor. George Gamble kindly brought refreshments for the players and everyone enjoyed the fresh sea air.
Played over six rounds and a time control of 5+5, the tournament was submitted to the Ulster Chess Union for ratings. A representative from Millisle Community Group was delighted to see the garden used for chess and explained how they created it 15 years ago by transforming a field into the tranquil community garden that greets visitors today. It is maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers. Such a beautiful little spot on the coast!
